While I did only a few book reviews, it was interesting to see the extremes of both quality and content. My personal taste here tends towards the ‘door-stop’ – huge, dry tomes which give you both an idiot’s guide to every single feature, and also discuss the underlying principles. Nothing irritates me more than the ‘gee-whizz ain’t this easy!’ tone of many of the beginner’s guides in the bookstores – it’s particularly inappropriate for the professionals who tend to use CAD.
Unfortunately there are many people out there who wouldn’t dream of even reading a recipe, let alone a hefty computer manual – these creative, parallel-processing right-brain dominant people are particularly ill-catered for by printed material, generally preferring to jump in and just try things out. Where it gets tricky with CAD is the very real need to know something of the big picture before you even start drawing.
